CXR's Predictions for the U.S.Chess League 2009 Championship Match

  • If Board 1 is Julio Becerra vs. Giorgi Kacheishvili:
Becerra will not lose.   He is at peak strength and rarely loses as white.   Kacheishvili is very cautious and will probably look to draw. He should, however, play aggressively and avoid an endgame, where Julio is particularly strong.
  • If Board 2 is Pascal Charbonneau vs. Blas Lugo:
Pascal will play 1.e4 and is looking for the Win. His biggest weakness will be overconfidence. Lugo is the underdog here, but is a cunning and risk-taking player with Black. He will also be playing for a Win. An endgame would favor Pascal.  We expect a bloody fight with no draw offers.
  • If Board 3 is Alejandro Moreno Roman vs. Matt Herman:
We have sparse data for AJM. He should avoid any Queen Pawn openings, where MH defends best. But we have to put our money on Matt, who is at his peak strength, to win this one.
  • If Board 4 is Yaacov Norowitz vs. Eric Rodriguez:
We see Eric with slightly better chances. Had the colors been reversed, we'd predict a clear Win for Rodriguez, but as it is, anything can happen. Both are strong endgame players, so they could give us a long battle.
